PREFACE. Iw presenting the fourth edition of the Coast Pilot to the Lake Navigator, the subscriber would respectfully say, that by the assist- ance of the late surveys, and his own observations on his usual tour round the Lakes, he has been enabled to correct and amend the work very materially. At the same time, the subscriber would tender to the fraternity his hearty thanks for the-appreciation of his efforts which has rendered a fourth edition necessary, and would further recom- mend it to the young navigator as well as to those who are from the Sea Board, or otherwise unacquainted. Attached will be found correct charts of the south shore of Lake Superior, with Fon du Lac Harbor'or Superior City, the Apos- tle Islands, Ontonagon Harbor, Eagle River, Hagle Harbor, Copper Harbor, Point Kewawena and Manitou Island, Portage Entry and Harbor, Marquette Bay and Grand Island Harbor. These, with other important additions, such as Table of Distances, Rules for gov- ernment of Pilots, Act of Congress, enlarged contents for quicker reference, etc. ; also, a description of all the harbors on Lake Onta- rio. The magnitude of the lakes, and other information relative to lake navigation, render it a necessary companion for all Pilots on the great chain of lakes. : | £ Tuos. 8S. Tompson. DeErRort, 1865.
