The Lighthouses at Waugoshance and Skillegolee are 84 miles apart ; and the range line of the two, as referred to the true meri- dian at Waugoshance Lighthouse, being just 827°W, a good oppor- tunity is afforded to masters of vessels to test the working of their mpasses by dropping upon this range, either to the SWbySis of Skillegolee about two miles, or to the NEbyN4N of Waugoshance Lighthouse about the same distance, and sailing upon the range 4 mile or so, keeping the Lighthouses covered in both cases. The magnetic variation, as observed on shore in that vicinity, is about 2° 45' EH. 7 . The White Shoals bear from Point Waugoshance Lighthouse NW4W 42 miles. You can pass all round them in 20 to 30 feet water. 'T'hey can be plainly seen in clear weather, Simmon's Reef bears from 'Point Waugoshance Lighthouse NWbyN 102 miles ; is 14 miles long, east and west. You can pass -- round it in from 18 to 24 feet water, and can be seen quite plain in clear weather. It bears from the White Shoals NWbyN4N 5} miles, and from the NW end of St. Helena WbhyN 172 miles.
