There are two open piers to the southward of the-harbor. The Lighthouse!is on the south bluff, and the Beacon: light on the North Pier. To run into the harbor, range the North Pier and run in; nothing less than 14 feet water-in 1864. The reef or middle ground bears from Racine Lighthouse E45 14 miles; least water 64 feet. The whole surface of this reef covers about. 2 acres, and is 4 'mile long, north and south, but narrow east and west. East from the harbor carries you clear of the north point of it. The reef bears from Racine Point SbyH, and the point from the harbor NNE. qn, appr oaching Racine from the northward and eastward, by paying due attention to the lead, this reef can easily be avoided, as the soundings are gradual ; and note that after passing Milwaukee, the color of the water will indicate your position, as there is no muddy water below Racine.
