The chain cables must be removed from their lockers, and ranged in the bottom of the dry dock or along the deck for the purpose of scaling, cleaning, and testing shackle pins, and when any part of the chain becomes reduced by rust or wear equal to 25 per cent. the original area, it must be renewed. s. The surveyor must satisfy himself of the efficient condition of the engines, boilers, masts, spars, sails, rigging, equipment and outfit. 6. The double or inner bottom should be tested with a head of water equal to the vessel's deep load draft. The collision bulkheads should be tested by filling the peak tanks with water, and all other watertight bulkheads tested by fire hose. FOURTH PERIODICAL SURVEY. SECTION 6. 1. The conditions and requirements of the fourth periodical survey are practically those given in Sec. 5, Par. 2, and following. 2. In all cases the class and period of time given in the Register will be maintained, so long as the vessel is submitted to the required periodical and annual surveys set forth in Sections 3 and 4, and her general conditions found to be worthy of the class assigned. 3. When through age or want of care general deterioration is apparent, the class numeral will be reduced, as her general condition may demand.
