F : : 24 RULES FOR FTHE CONSTRUCTION OF SIEEL VESSELS. NAME OF DECKS. SECTION 8. 1. The weather deck of a one, two, or three deck vessel, whose sides are plated up to the said weather deck, shall, in application to the present rules, be called the Upper Deck (awning deck excepted). 2. The several decks, or tiers of beams, below the weather (upper) deck to be distinguished as 2d and 3d decks, in their descending order. 3. Spar Decks will be included in the above category and referred to, in application for decks, as the Upper Deck. SPAR DECK, STEAM VESSELS. SECTION 9. 1. Spar decks are included in the order of arrangements for decks given in See. 8, Par:2: 2. Steel and iron steam vessels with cargo gangways cut in their topside, and the 2d deck, fully plated, will be included in the category of spar deck vessels for lake navigation. 3. A reduction of 15 per cent. from that given in Table 1 for topside plating, z.¢., plating between the upper deck sheerstrake and the second deck, will be allowed in spar deck vessels, providing the deck directly below the weather deck is continuous and fully laid, and that the main sheerstrake, or shell plating in way of the second deck, be increased in thickness equal to the reduction made in the strakes of plating in which the cargo gangways are cut. 4. The reverse frames must extend to the upper, or weather, deck, and above the second deck stringer alternately. 5. If the frames are of bulb angle, channel, or Z bars, they must extend in full to the (upper) weather deck. 6. On either side of the cargo gangway suitable web frames are to be introduced, as compensation for frames cut at the gangways, and a doubling plate extending two frames forward and aft of the gangway openings to be riveted to the sheerstrake over said gangways. 7. The edges of the gangway ports to be reinforced by a suitable wrought iron frame, riveted on the inside of the plating, and gangway doors of approved design fitted to said frame. Plans for the above construction must be submitted to the Classification Com- mittee for approval. 8. The (upper) weather deck plating between the stringer plates may be of dimensions given in Table 9. g. Dimensions of upper deck beams to be of the size given in Table 6 for the upper deck of 2 and 3 deck steam vessels. 1o. Dimensions of stringers and stringer angles, deck plating and ties, to be same as given in Table 9. 11. For riveting, see Sections 57, 58, 59 and 60. 12. All scantlings for spar deck vessels are given in the tables, in accord- ance with their dimensions measured as per Sec. 7, Pars. 1 to 5. AWNING DECK VESSELS. SECTION 10. 1. An awning deck is a continuous light superstructure with closed sides _ and intended for light goods and shelter for passengers. See page 29. It may be erected above the upper deck of two or three deck vessels and treated as an exposed deck, but in no case will this structure be permitted on single deck ves- sels, unless plans of same be submitted and approved by the Committee. 2. The scantlings may be somewhat lighter than those for spar decks. 3. The deck directly below the awning deck (2d deck) must be continuous, fully laid, and of the thickness required by Table 9. It must have proper hatch- coamings and fitted in every respect as an exposed deck. 4. The measurement for depth in awning deck vessels to be taken as given in See. 7, Par. ¢. 5. The engine-room hatchway must be enclosed by proper plating from the second to the awning deck and strengthened vertically by proper angle bars. 6. For particulars of riveting, see Secs. 57 to 60.
