When a bar keel is used the lower part of the stem is to have the same moulding as the bar keel and connected thereto by a scarph of the same length of scarph given for bar keels. See Sec. 14, Par. 1. 4. When a flat plate keel is used, the lower part of the stem, from where the curve begins and downward, should be somewhat increased in section and flattened the reverse way of the moulding to a gradual taper, so that the thickness at the end will be equal to that of the buttstraps of the flat plate keel and the width at the end equal to that of the keel liner. 5. The length of the flattened scarph should be six times the tabular moulding of the stem and its connection with the keel plate must be thoroughly efficient. 6. Drawings showing method of attachment must be submitted to the Com- mittee for approval. STERNPOSTS AND STERN FRAMES. SECTION 18. 1. Sternpost of twin screw and side wheel steamers, towbarges and sailing vessels, also single screw steamers, to be of dimensions given in their respective columns in Table 1. They should be of the best hammered iron or steel and should comply with test requirements of Table 12. 2. In all vessels fitted with gudgeon rudders the section of the sternpost should be increased in way of rudder gudgeons, and a solid boss should be wrought to the heel of the sternpost to receive the foot pintle of the rudder. 3. A reduction in the section of all sternposts above the counter will be permitted, but in no case must the section be less at the head than 75 per cent. of the tabular size for sternposts. 4. In sailing vessels and towbarges the foot forging of the sternpost should extend forward at least 5 feet in vessels whose depth of hold is 12 feet and under, and 6 feet for all tabular depths above. 5. It must be gradually reduced in size to the forward end for a proper connection with the keel, and if in conjunction with a bar keel the scarph should be in length equal to that given in Sec. 14, Par. 1. 6. That part of the sternpost above the counter must be efficiently con- nected to a transom plate of a thickness required for body floors and twice their depth. It should also be in conjunction with and secured to a plated deck or by other suitable compensation. 7. IN SINGLE SCREW PROPELLERS the propeller post (sternpost) should be in one piece and not less in section than given in Table 1. It should be thick- ened at the foot by one-half the tabular size where the shoe joins the post. The forward end of the foot forging to extend into the vessel not less than 6 feet, and when the tabular depth of hold is more than 12 feet the foot knee must extend forward at least four frames spaces and form a proper and efficient connection with the keel, to the satisfaction of the surveyor. 8. The shoe, which forms a part of the solid foot forging, should extend aft beyond the propeller post and slightly turned up at the end, on which a suitable hub or boss must be forged to receive the foot pintle of the rudder. g. The section of the shoe directly below the propeller to be at least equal to that of the tabular propeller post. to. The boss of the propeller post on each side of the shaft aperture should not be less than 65 per cent. of the tabular section of the propeller post. 11. PROPELLER POsT IN CONJUNCTION WITH FLAT PLATE KEEL.-- When the propeller post (sternpost) is to be fitted to a flat plate keel, that part of the foot forging extending forward should be flattened horizontally with a gradual taper, so that the thickness at the end will be equal to that of the keel butt straps, and of a width at least equal to the sum of the flanges of keel angles, and the thickness of the center keelson. 12. The forward end or knee of the propeller post foot forging must be in accordance with Par. 7 of this Section. 13.. The shoe to be forged to the sternpost and the end to have a forged hub to receive the pintle of the rudder. The shoe, between the sternpost and the rudder pintle hub, to be in section not less than that of the sternpost. 14. The upper part of the sternpost must conform to the shape of the . counter and the head efficiently connected with the transom frame, as set forth in Sec. 18, Par. 6. Drawings of stern frame and their connections to keel and transom should be submitted to the Committee for approval.
