Chicago River before the great fire


The "before" face of a before-and-after pair of stereoviews illustrating shipping in the Chicago River at the time of the Great Fire of 8 Oct 1871. The perspective is from just behind and above the Rush Street bridge where a number of teams wait for the bridge to close. Lining the banks of the river are a succession of schooners. A tug tows another two-masted schooner towards the open bridge. In the background to the right is the Central Elevator
