Her keel was laid March 20th, 1943. She grosses 5,090 tons, develops 10,000 H.P. is 290 feet long, with a beam of 7414 feet. Her Diesel Engines drive six electric generators, which supply power for three electric propulsion motors. She has three propellers, one at the bow and two at the stern. The bow propeller is employed to churn the water beneath the ice. Outside plates are 134" thick up to the ice belt, and 15g" thick throughout the ice belt. Oil Fuel capacity is 440,000 gallons. She is also equipped with 2--12 ton cranes to handle aids-to-navigation. There is not a single rivet in the entire Hull structure, notched stern is to permit entry of freighters bow when towing. 503
