LAWRENCE SEAWAY AUTHORITY WESTERN DISTRICT WELLAND SHIP CANAL PORT WELLER HARBOUR, Ontario, Canada. Lat. 43°14' N. Long. 79°13' W. Situation Port Weller is an artificial harbour forming the Lake Ontario entrance of the Welland Ship Canal. The outer harbour consists of two parallel breakwaters of earthwork and reinforced concrete cribwork, built 6000 feet long and 800 feet apart, except at the north end where they converge to an entrance 400 feet wide. The inner harbour at the south end is an approach to Lock No. 1, 2800 feet long and 250 feet wide. Available Dimensions in Locks The depth in the Canal prism is 27 feet. The maximum permissible draft is 25 feet 6 inches. A vessel that exceeds 715 feet in overall length and 72 feet in beam, but not exceeding 730 feet in ovrall length and 75 feet in beam, may, with special instructions from the Authority, transit the Seaway during the navigation season. Masts: Vessels whose masts extend more than one hundred and seventeen (117) feet above water level will not be permitted to transit the Seaway. Vessels whose masts extend more than one hundred and ten (110) feet above water level must not transit the Seaway until the Master has furnished the officer in charge with precise information concerning the height of such vessel's masts with respect to the water level. Speed: Every vessel transiting a Canal shall proceed at a reasonable speed, so as not to cause undue delay to vessels navigating in the same direction.
