COAL AND MISCELLANEOUS DOCKS OF THE GREAT LAKES--Continued Seaway Notices to Mariners, the maximum speed for vessels moving in any Seaway Canal shall be six (6) miles per hour over the bottom for vessels exceeding 260 feet in length and eight (8) miles per hour for vessels under 260 feet long. : The total lift in the Welland Ship Canal is approximately 326 feet 6 inches between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, a distance of 27.6 statute miles. Harbour Facilities 1. A section of the west entrance wall, 1200 feet in length with 27 feet of water alongside, can be used for coal storage. The northerly 575 feet is in use by the Empire Hanna Coal Co., and the remaining 625 feet by the W. R. Cameron Sand & Coal Co. 2. Opposite this, on the east side, there is another coal dock of the Empire Hanna Coal Co., 600 feet in length with 27 feet of water alongside, which has a movable clam with a 1500 ib. capacity bucket which can be used in emergencies. Pilotage The use of a pilot is not mandatory; however, pilot service is avail- able at Port Weller (upbound) and at Sarnia (downbound). Towage Towing service is provided by the Seaway Authority to vessels in distress. Lighters There is no lightering service. Anchorage Vessels anchor in the Lake only. Tides and Currents Slight currents exist in the Welland Ship Canal, occasioned by the filling and emptying of the locks. ee yer e Power Cables ee "Masts," and General Chart of the Welland Shi No. 2042). eee Dry Dock Port Weller Dry Docks, Limited, is located at Lock No. 1 of the Welland Ship Canal and has 30 feet of water over the sills. It includes a building berth 730 feet long and a graving dock 750 feet long, which, along with the 80 foot gates, provide accomoda- tion fee veceel: 730 feet in overall length and 75 foot beam. A 1200 foot fitting out berth is a recent addition. Major equipment in- cludes a 125 ton sheer leg crane, a 45 ton travelling gantry crane, and a 55 ton gantry-type travelling crane on the fitting out berth. Working Hours : 24 hours per day for 8% months per year -- April 1st to Decem- ber 15th. (a) Radio-Telephone Equipment It is recommended that vessels be equipped with V.H.I. (very high frequency) in addition to the required M.F. (medium frequency) radio-telephone equipment. The radio transmitter should have sufficient power output to enable the vessel to contact the Authority radio stations from a distance of 25 miles. Recommended Equipment While vessels are not required to carry anchors and "visible and audible wrong-way propeller direction alarm systems," this equipment is strongly recommended for vessels exceeding 260 feet in overall length transiting the Seaway. Landing booms or other adequate provisions for landing men from vessels are also recommended. Satisfactory fairleads, equivalent to the Port Colborne fairleads, are strongly recommended.
