A FEW HISTORICAL FACTS AND THE CANALS--Continued THOROLD The Town of Seven Locks Location Situated on the Welland Ship Canal, at the height of land between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, in the Garden of Canada. Thirty-five miles from Buffalo, N. Y.; eighty miles from Toronto, Ont.; forty miles from Hamilton, Ont.; eight miles from Niagara Falls; five miles from St. Catharines. Industry and Transportation Thorold has many diversified industries, with paper-making predominating. Throughout the Niagara district flourish large fruit and dairy farms, market gardens, vineyards and mixed farming. Thorold town and township offer advantages to manu- facturers which cannot be excelled anywhere in the Dominion. Many large sites are available on the new Welland Ship Canal, with a turning basin to handle the largest freighters and a dock and ware- house conveniently located on the C.N.R., and road leading to the highway. The Thorold Dock is of immense benefit to foreign ship- pers. Recreation All branches of seasonal sport are supported and ably handled by the Thorold Amateur Athletic Association. Assets to sporting activities are a natural ice arena, and a large open-air swimming pool located near the new sports field and High School. Power and Water Supply Power is sold in Thorold at cost, and is available to manufac- turers in any desired quantity, it being generated in five of the largest Hydro Electric plants in the world, but eight miles distant, which assures continuous and unbroken service. The water supply is plentiful, and of the very best, being drawn from Lake Erie and thoroughly treated. This is available for manufacturing purposes at reduced rates. Thorold is the closest point to the Niagara power generating plants that has both rail and water shipping facilities. Where the Steamships Climb the Mountain At Thorold are located those wonderful examples of engineering, the Great Twin Flight Locks on the Welland Ship Canal. They are shown above. Reading from the foreground are numbers 4, 5 and 6, with single lock 7 in the background.
