An adequate steel stock and general supplies are maintained for ship repairs of all kinds. The Buffalo Yard is one of the oldest on the Great Lakes. One of its functions is to service the large grain fleet which winters in Buffalo. For this purpose a new, self-propelled deck barge having a locomotive-type, 25-ton crane was built and placed in operation in 1955. This vessel, the SERvicE II, has a speed of 8 miles per hour, and is equipped with tools for harbor repair work and a radio telephone for quick dispatch.
