EEE Description the Great Northern * ek ee OR AN 8 ee ee NEW PACIFIC RET LINER GREAT NORTHERN and Northern Pacific Which Cramps Have Built for the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway Co. HESE two exceptionally fine ves- sels have been built by the Wm. Cramp & Sons Ship & Engine Building Co., to the order of the Spokane. Portland & Seattle Railway Co., and are to run between Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia river and San Francisco. It is intended to maintain a schedule of 24 hours between the ports named; con- sequently, the vessels are of very fine lines and capable with the machinery in- stalled of developing a maximum speed of 34 knots an hour. The vessels have -had special attention paid to the safety of the passengers, both from the danger of fire and from collision at sea. The vessels are divided into numerous watertight compartments, by such an arrangement of transverse bulkheads and _ longitudinal. bulkheads that the three forward compartments can be bilged and filled with water, without altering the trim of the vessel to such an extent as to bring. her: be- low the margin of safety line. Any other two compartments in the ship can be similarly bilged without endangering" the safety of the vessel. The vessels are: fitted with Parsons turbines driving three screws; one cen- ter and two wing screws. The boilers are Babcock & Wilcox water tube ex- press type, having a total heating sur- face of 60,000 square feet with a work- ing pressure of 220 pounds per square inch. In all there are 12 of these boilers in two water-tight compartments. They are fitted for burning oil under forced draft system consisting of tur- bine-driven blowers, three in each fire room.
