May, 1915 THE MARINE REVIEW ELECTRIC LIGHT AND PUMPING SET OF AUXILIARY SCHOONER GOLDEN GATE lies between San Francisco and Pirate Cove, Alaska, and formerly consumed from. 25 to 30 days. Since the in- stallation of auxiliary power, how- ever, this time has been reduced to 13, to. 15 days: The hull of the Golden State is of wood throughout, the design being extremely substantial in order to with- stand the severe storms of the North Pacific. She was built at San Fran- cisco of specially selected and dry wood, thus insuring a longer life than when put in damp, as is often the case in northern yards.’ Golden State’s dimensions are as follows: Length, 145 feet; beam, 32 feet, and depth, 11%4 feet. She has a carrying capacity of approximately 500 tons of fish. The main power installation con- sists of a 4-cylinder, 150-horsepower distillate engine of- the open cross- head type placed under the after cabin. This engine is connected to, a two-bladed propeller through the usual disc clutch and reverse gear. Traffic of Suez Canal How the war has effected the in- come of the Suez canal during the year 1914 is shown in the details of the year’s navigation compiled by Worms: & Co: of Port Said. During 1914 a total of 4,802 vessels passed through the waterway, as compared with 5,085 vessels in 1913 and 5,373 vessels in 1912. The year 1914 opened with the far eastern trade depressed. Sailings to China, Japan and Australia were reduced in volume and it was noted that the monthly revenue re- turns of the canal were lower than those of the same month in 1913. The following tabulation shows the number and gross tonnage of vessels using the Suez canal each month dur- ing the year, giving for comparative purposes the same data for the two previous years: 1912 1913 No. of Gross No. of | Gross ves- ton- ves- ton- Month. sels, nage. sels. nage. lich Bases aires 484 2,612,071 454 2,484,241 eb orett: 466 2,831,330 411 2,197,257 Mar ess 497... 25535,857 477 —- 2,547,004 Apres iece: 451 2,313,024 407 2,267,693 Migty fen ses 494 2,517,213 429 2,311,811 June 3 Sc 433 2,194,536 399 =: 2,128, 813 Nil eee sce, 454 2,354,170 422° °-2,308,211 Dalibieavaeeeraty mt 409 2,098,002 397 = 2,159,742 Sep si, 407 2,168,393 395 2,162,879 Octerie 426° 2,297,915 438 2,413,753 INOVisceiacs: 424 2,270,274 405 2,285,840 Deere ec 428 2,316,160 451 2,469,936 Total .. 5,373 28,008,945 5,085 27,737,180 1914 No. of Gross Month. vessels. tonnage. As usual, the British flag was pre- eminent on the canal, the Union Jack appearing on 66.09 per cent of the ves- sels. Germany is second with 11.02 per cent and Holland third with 7.17 per cent.
