A deal involving $3,000,000 was re- cently put through, the Interlake Steamship. Co. ‘taking over <the 13 stock steamers of the Cleveland Steamship Co. Both companies have headquarters at Cleveland. The price was agreed upon some time ago and the stockholders of the Cleveland Steamship. Co. have ratified the sale. The price ‘which was paid for the boats was about _ Francisco, February, 1916 essels $3,000,000. It was a cash transaction. The boats of the Interlake fleet, which is the second largest on the lakes, be- ing next to the Pittsburg Steamship Co., both. in the number of vessels and ton- nage, are managed by Pickands, Mather & Co. The company this season will have 52 bulk freighters, 50 being steam- ers and two barges. A 12,000-ton steamer which is building for the com- pany at the Lorain yard of the American Shipbuilding Co., will come out next June, when the firm will have more than 7,000,000 tons of vessel capacity a season. The addition of the Cleveland boats will increase the capacity of the fleet about 96,600 tons a trip, or about 1,900,- 000 tons a season, figuring 20 cargoes for each boat. There are three 10,000- ton ships in the fleet and the capacity of the smallest boat is 5,200 tons. The other nine .steamers carry about 7,000 tons each. The boats that were taken over are the steamers A. C. Dustin, Lortus Cuppy, JosepH SertLwoop, PENDENNIS Wuirtet, J. J. Arpricut, E. A. S. CLARKE, W. H. Gratwick, H. S. Hotpen, M. A. Hanna, W. E. Reis, WALTER SCRANTON, Moses Taytor, Laconpa. Captain John Mitchell, who has been at the head of the Cleveland Steamship Co. since it was organized, will remain in the business. He is manager of the Buffalo Steamship Co., which operates the steamers WiLL1AM C. AGNEW, HucH Kennepy and S. M. CLEMENT, and the Gratwick Steamship Co., which operates the steamer J. J. McWrtrAMs. Captain Mitchell has been in the vessel business more than 40 years. He came to Cleve- land from Marine City about 28 years ago. Captain Mitchell started with small vessels in the lumber trade and built his first steel steamer after coming to Cleve- land. _ The steamship Moncoria, one of the four big cargo carriers purchased from the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. to be operated under the American flag by the Atlantic Transport Line, arrived in New York ‘recently after a voyage from San Francisco. The oil tank steamer Catania has been sold by the Coast Oil Co., San to the Mexican Petroleum Co., at a price said to be about $130,- 000. The vessel was badly damaged on the lower Pacific coast last Octo- ber and at present is at the Union Iron Works Co. yards in San Fran- cisco, being repaired, after which she will load oil from that port for Rio de Janeiro, and then be permanently transferred to the Atlantic trade.
