April, 1919 THE MARINE REVIEW Modern Seamanship Demands Modern Appliances for Its Efficient Application This demand recognizes nothing of mediocre merit. _Its_standards are based on tested and dependable service. To this extent and in this capacity ‘Superior’ Equipment more than qualifies, meeting in every instance the most exacting requirements of modern seamanship. Worm Geared Steering Engine This is the type commonly used on sea-going cargo vessels which American ship builders are building so extensively. The engine can be placed inside the engine room while the chain drum is on the main deck outside, the shafting passing through stuffing box in the bulkhead. Adjustable bearings at each end of worm, convenient’ arrangement of con- ‘ ‘ trols and connections, etc., make this type Automatic Steam Steering exceptionally desirable. Engine This type of engine is extensively used by the U. S. Government for sea-going tugs. We have Interesting Bulletins on These and Many Other Machines. It is very rigid and compact, occupies very little’ floor space, and can be located in any con- venient position on board ship. The drum of the steering engine is grooved for chain or wire ropes which connect to the tiller quadrant. The worm and worm gear have machine cut teeth, the worm thrust is taken by large thrust bearings at each end, and the worm runs in an oil bath which insures the best lubrication. The vertical control shaft at the engine is connected to the shaft from the steering wheel stand in the pilot house. The control throttle valve is of the piston type, perfectly balanced, and is so arranged that the engine responds instantaneously to any movement of the wheel in the pilot house. “Superior” Vertical Hand Capstan Windlass This type of Windlass is recommended for installation on Tugs and Trawlers where space is an important factor. The Wild-cat is operated by locking it to the capstan barrel by means of a block key, and is fitted with a compression band for holding and letting out anchor. The Capstan can be operated independent of the Wild-cat by simply removing the block key.
