14 THE MARINE REVIEW Propelling Machinery Put To Severe Test— When two days out from New Orleans, the S. S. Noccalulu, equipped with Westinghouse Propulsion machinery, grounded heavily on a shoal in the Gulf. In order to extricate her from this dangerous position, the main propulsion machinery was operated from full ahead to full astern repeatedly for two days, at the end of which time she was finally floated. As a precautionary measure before proceeding further, her engines were shut down for inspection. Chief Engineer Twitchell states that in spite of the severe service imposed by operation when the ship was in her strained position on the shoal, and repeated reversals, the equipment was found in good condition. The S.S. Noccalulu is equipped with 3,000 S.H.P. Westinghouse Geared Turbines. The turbines operate at 3600 rpm. and the propeller 90 rpm.
