February, 1921 THE MARINE REVIEW 47 Types of Marine Superheaters Marine boilers are of two general types—Scotch marine and water-tube. There are, accordingly, two general types of superheaters. In the Scotch marine boiler it has been found most advisable to use the waste heat type of superheater. These superheaters are installed in the boiler uptakes because of the excessive stack temperatures in the Scotch boiler. By placing the superheater in the uptake, the otherwise lower efficiency of this type of boiler is considerably improved and a mar ed reduction of fuel consumption is obtained. In some cases flue type superheaters are used, but these need very careful operation to prevent high operating costs. With water-tube boilers, having lower stack temperatures and higher efficiency than the Scotch marine type, it is found preferable to install the superheater in the bank of tubes. Any desired degree of superheat can be obtained in this manner, and, if the superheater is properly designed end situated, the boiler efficiency as well as the engine or turbine economy will be improved. | P OWER SP ECIALTY Foster Marine Superheaters are built for every type of COMP ANY boiler and for any operating conditions.
