How Ship Engineers Learn From Land Practice Tin marine engineer is quick to put into operation any device which has proven itself particularly efficient in land practice, because his je = problem of economy of fuel consump- o tion is even more acute than any land problem could be. | Such a device is the Todd Thermo- feed, which in land plants has shown as high as a 12% fuel saving with fixed power output, and which in operation on marine boilers has greatly aided in efficient and economical power main- | tenance. Marine engineers know that thereisa water level point at which boilers func- tion at maximum capacity, and that the closer the water level can be kept to this ee SS ++ i Se : Soe ie Ss Si SS 7 SSS IS GfLELE. The water level in the chamber shown above is the same as the water level in the boilers, this level being automati- cally kept at the desired point by the action of the spherical float shown. When the water level gets too high, the float rises and by the operation of its toggles allows steam to pass from the chamber into pipe shown at top of diagram. This throttles the feed water. When the water level gets too low, the reverse hap- pens and the valve on the feed line is opened. For steady and economical boiler feeding Please mention MARINE REVIEW when writing to Advertisers
