Jone, 1923 Will Sample Coal Inspection and sampling of coal pur- chased by the shipping board in New York for its steamship lines will now be done by the department of the in- terior through its bureau of mines. The work will include sampling of foreign coal remaining in bunker upon the ar- rival of these ships in New York as well as sampling the coal while it is being loaded on these vessels in the New York port. Obituary John Gilbert Ward, treasurer of Bab- cock & Wilcox Co, New York, for the past 30 years, died at his home in Glen Ridge, N. J., on April 12. He was born in Cuba on July 12, 1854, where his father, an Englishman, had settled. His mother was a Cuban. Mr. Ward’s early life was passed in Dela- ware. He became connected with Bab- cock & Wilcox Co. in 1888, as a clerk in the treasurer’s office, and in 1893 he was elected a director and treasurer of the company, both of which offices he held until the time of his death.
