12 From Steam to Motor Drive —at Moderate Conversion Cost MARINE REVIEW HE Bethlehem Oil Engine makes the con- version of steamships to motor drive simpler, and more economical. Ship owners can convert their vessels to motorships and en- joy the advantages of lower fuel consumption and greater cargo capacity at a moderate con- version cost. The simplicity and compactness of the Beth- lehem Oil Engine are due to the fact that it is of the two-cycle type. This engine is particularly adapted for the conversion of single-screw steam- ships to motor drive without changing the shaft or propeller or the stern construction and with- out altering or enlarging the vessel’s machinery space. This is an American engine, built on a distinc- tive Bethlehem design by engineers thoroughly experienced in building and installing marine propelling machinery. Years of hard service at sea have amply demonstrated its depend- ability. Bethlehem engineers will welcome an oppor- tunity to give you complete details of the Beth- lehem Oil Engine and to discuss its application to any vessel. The Bethlehem Oil Engine is built in units of four, six and eight cylinders, and runs at 90 R.P.M. for single screw and 115 R.P.M. for twin screw vessels. Fuel is injected into the cylinders in a highly atomized form by the aid of com- pressed air, ignition being caused solely by the heat of the compressed air into which the fuel is injected.
