May, 1924 MARINE REVIEW 13 Standard Oil Tanker J. H. Senior ‘WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC ~ AsEasilyManeuvered asa Launch Sitnplicity of control is perhaps the most spectacular feature of the Standard Oil Tanker J. H. Senior. Maneuvered entirely from the pilot house, independent of the engine room crew, the former uncertain human element between orders and their execution, no longer exists. Pilot house control is positive and instantly responsive to the will of the navigator. Turn the hand wheel while going full speed ahead, and the boat will start on its reverse course in ninety seconds. When the rudder control lever is turned either to port or to starboard, there is instant response to the action of the electrical steering gear, In addition to being electrically propelled and maneuvered, the quarters of the captain and the crew are heated, or cooled, electrically; food is cooked electrically; and all auxiliary apparatus is electrically operated. Westinghouse Diesel-Electric Drive is inherently economical, and an additional saving is made by shutting down the main engines and bringing into use a small auxiliary for light, heat and power when stops are made. The J. H. Senior is now in regular service on the Chesapeake and her tributaries.
