MARINE REVIEW 4 cylinder Bethlebem Oil Engine Fuel is injected into the cylinders in min- utely atomized form by the aid of high pressure air. Ignition under all conditions including cold start- ing, is caused solely by the heat of air compressed in the cylinders prior to fuel injection. years of service before this engine was marketed HE first Bethlehem Oil Engine—a six cylinder unit—was completed and placed in service in Bethlehem’s power station in November, 1918. For more than a year this engine was used to generate alternating current for Beth- lehem’s steel mills. Later it was installed in M.S. Cubore, one of our ore vessels, where it is still at work, driving the vessel on regular voyages of several thousand miles. A second six-cylinder unit was then built, to replace the first in the power station. It gave completely satisfactory service over a continuous period of twenty months. Then, in December, 1923, five years after the completion of the first engine, the Beth- lehem Oil Engine was placed on the market. Five years may seem an unnecessarily long time to devote to test service. But Beth- lehem preferred to offer this engine to Ameri- can shipowners as a thoroughly perfected engine—an engine whose ruggedness and staying power had been established beyond any question. As a result, the shipowner who installs the Bethlehem Oil Engine knows surely that it possesses the paramount require- ment of a_ satisfactory power source— dependability.
