112 Lakes tugs have the diesel engine drive. Four ocean going tugs are fitted with diesel-electric drive. Two tankers and five dredges have the diesel-electric main drive. It will be noted that the diesel engine main drive has been adopted in increasing numbers for smaller tankers, though there is one large tanker of 13,300 tons deadweight which will be equipped with this type of power. A steadily increasing number of tugs are being fitted with direct diesel drive. The diesel electric main drive, for the building program of 1924 has been adopted in tugs, small tankers and in dredges. Analyzing the entire list of new vessels for type of main drive we find that nine passenger vessels and one freighter have steam turbines and reduction gears and oil fired boilers, that 30 vessels of various classes and sizes have reciprocating steam engines and coal fired boilers, that 28 vessels of all classes have recipro- cating steam engines and oil fired boilers, that 21 vessels of different classes and sizes (not including any passenger vessels however) have diesel engine main drive, and 11 tugs, tankers and dredges have diesel- } Name and Service Edward J. Of this number a little more than half burn oil. Or putting it another way, of all the vessels under consideration 36.6 per cent are steam driven, burning oil, 31.7 per cent are steam driven burning coal and 31.7 per _ cent are diesel or diesel-electric. These percentages relate to the number of vessels in the three classifications and would not apply at all to comparative tonnages. In tonnage figures the diesel and diesel-electric would be very considerably reduced. & 2 146 AMiimnmmnnnnnnnnnn MMMM
