June, 1925 MARINE REVIEW 25 The New Gateway of the East! PORT NEWARK—part of the Port of New York— offers the most direct and economical contact that can possibly be made with the densely popu- lated centers of the East and Middle West— America’s greatest producing and consuming terri- tory. Five trunk line railroads from the interior converge at Port Newark, and have direct belt line switching connections with its water front. The principal motor highways, which cover the Atlantic seaboard like a vast net, pass through Port Newark and connect it with all of the great cities of this section, from Baltimore to Boston. Regular barge service from Port Newark to Buffalo, via the New York State Barge Canal, provides a_ cheap all-water route to the Great Lakes ports. From the standpoint of natur- ally advantageous location, Port Newark has no equal on the Atlantic Seaboard. This natur- al advantage has been fully — capitalized in the physical de- velopment of Port Newark. The channel approach has a sufficient depth (31 feet at low tide) to make navi- gation safe and easy for practically any PHILADELPHIA 06 CAMDEN, XN sft OWILMINGTON . class of shipping. Ideal loading conditions are pro- vided by a 7,000 foot inshore ship canal, 670 feet wide, lined along both sides by modern docks with adequate handling equipment. In order to eliminate lighterage completely, the docks are paralleled by paved roadways and rail sidings, so that direct exchange of cargoes can be made be- tween ship and truck or freight car. Abundant protected, fireproof warehouse space is available, also open storage if desired. Rates for dockage, wharfage and storage compare favorably with those in effect at other Atlantic ports. Thetonnage acrossthe Port Newark docks has shown a consistent inc-ease month after month for several years. Many inland manufacturers and ship- pers have made Port Newark their eastern distributing center, and it is safe to predict that more will do so as the advan- tages of this remarkably well- equipped and well situated port become better known. It will pay you to read .the compre- hensive book “PORT NEWARK”, which gives a complete yet concise summary of the important facts about the port. Write for your free copy today. THOS. L.
