October, 1925 bridge deck, quarters for the cattle- men being on the opposite side. Steam heating is provided for use in cold weather. The steering gear is of the Wilson Pirrie type mounted on the upper deck aft; telemotor gear leading from the bridge and a stand by steering position aft, together with emergency gear to be operated by the aft winches, is provided. Signalling and direction finding wireless gear are provided. Fourteen steam winches, 7 x 12 inches, are fitted for handling the eargo. The derricks are ,fitted to the two masts and to derrick posts. Two of these on the foremast are of 10-ton capacity, the remainder being of 5- ton capacity. The refrigerating plant, supplied by Messrs. J. & E. Hall Ltd., is of the carbon dioxide duplex type, the gas compressors being driven by a com- pound horizontal steam engine. The brine is circulated by three indepen- dent duplex pumps, the system being arranged so that freezing, chilling and thawing may be carried out at the same time in different compartments. The main machinery consists of a single, 8-cylinder oil engine of the Vickers 4-stroke single acting solid in- jection type with cylinders 30 inches in diameter and 45 inches piston stroke. This engine, which develops 2700 brake horsepower at 110 revolu- tions per minute is the largest of its type yet built. It embodies many improvements in details suggested by experience in tanker service of sim- 2700 BRAKE HORSEPOWER OIL ENGINE FOR MOTORSHIP MOVERIA EIGHT CYLINDER FOUR CYCLE VICKERS MARINE REVIEW 355 SINGLE SCREW MOTORSHIP MOVERIA BUILT AT VICKERS LTD. Compressed air is used for starting and reversing only in this type of oil engine, the fuel being injected into the cylinder by mechan- ical means. Maneuvering is effected simply by the movement of three hand levers ar- ranged together at the starting sta- tion near the middle of the engine and controlling the starting, stopping and reversing functions. The engine is self-contained with all the necessary pumps for its own op- erations and also drives a bilge pump so that in normal service no separate auxiliaries require to be run specially on this account. Three boilers, 10 feet 6 inches long by 10 feet 6 inches in diameter with double furnaces fitted for oil firing, are fitted at the aft end of the engine LTD; TYPE room for supplying steam to the deck and engine room auxiliary machinery including the large refrigerating plant. Each boiler has a heating surface of 1098 square feet and a working pres- sure of 120 pounds per square inch. * * * Twin Screw Motorship Bo rge stad The motorship BorGEsTAD, illus- trated in the accompanying photo- graph and profile is of the single deck type with poop, bridge and forecastle and is classed I.
