October, 1925 MARINE REVIEW 23 saounne i HE 5S. S. MALOLO, the largest and most expensive- ly furnished of any passen- ger vessel yet built in the U. S., is to be propelled by twin screws each driven by geared turbines. Each propelling unit, comprising two DE LAVAL SINGLE REDUCTION GEARS, will develop 12,500 H.P. at a propeller speed of 120 r. p. m. These gears are the largest in di- mensions of any yet built in this country, the pitch diameter being 140 in. and the total width of the face 57 in. The turbines are designed to drive the vessel at 21 knots, making the San Francisco-Honolulu trip in 41% days. De Laval gears and turbines constitute the most economical and reliable drive for merchant and passenger vessels, and are also used in the fastest cruisers, destroyers, and battleships.
