B. per hr.— DESCRIPTION One engine of this size and type was in- stalled in the Hog Island class _ vessel SEEKONK by the Wm. Cramp & Sons Ship & Engine Building Co. in 1928. The engine, a Cramp-B. & W. diesel of long stroke and slow speed, developed for single screw _ vessels, was built by the Cramp company. In loaded condition in good weather the SEE- KONK makes_ about 10% knots with the propeller turning 86 revolutions per minute and the main engine developing 2300 I.H.P. 0.294, taken from actual service at sea; Tons per day—7.4 Generators—Three of 65-kilowatt capacity each, driven by three 100 B. H. P. two-cylinder Cramp B. & W. diesel engines; Electrical end built by Diehl Mfg. Co. A comparison between the SEEKONK and the steamships of the Hog Island class indicates a striking advantage for the motorship. In a paper before the Society of Naval Architects, J. C. Shaw, member, summed it up as follows: “For an average sea speed of 10.25 knots the con- sumption of the motorship can be taken as 7% tons and the steamer sister ship as 28 tons. With 53 per cent of the time at sea and 47 per cent of the time in port, etce., the fuel consump- tion on an annual basis, per diem, is about 19 tons for the steamer and 4% tons for the diesel.” SEEKONK-—Single screw—One 2300 indicated horsepower diesel engine direct connected to the propeller 15
