Transporting gasoline and other petroleum products in the crowded waters of the New York harbor is a service that is filled with exacting requirements. That is why the tank boat “Berrien,” engaged in this type of service, is a particularly interesting ad- dition to that growing fleet of Fairbanks- Morse equipped boats that dot the New York harbor. The “Berrien” was recently put into service by Riley & Kendall of New York who are pioneers in the transportation of petroleum products around the New York harbor and adjacent waters. Naturally the owners of this tanker placed dependability foremost in their choice of propulsion power, and for their guidance they had the experience with Fairbanks-Morse Engines on two other tankers which they had been operating a considerable time. They were impressed Only F-M dependability would do also with the exceptional maneuvering ability of the F-M Diesel-—-a quality all- importantin these congested waters. Hence they chose for the “Berrien” a Fairbanks- Morse Diesel of 180 hp.—and both the trial run and the subsequent highly satis- factory service of this engine proved the wisdom of their decision. : No expense was spared ‘to make this boat the safest and most efficient of its type in the harbor. Every safety precaution has been taken. Engine exhaust, electric light outlets, switches—all are spark proof. Cargo is carried in nine cylindrical steel tanks, three on deck and six in the hold— having a total capacity of 46,000 gallons. The matchless performance which the F-M Diesel is giving on boats like this tanker is causing more and more oper- ators to realize that only F-M depend- ability will do!
