Per Cylinder Suit- able for Direct Drive—Alro Generating Eets as Auxiliaries and construction of diesel engines have been unusually rapid during the past few years. That this de- velopment has reached the small en- gine field is shown by the fact that Fairbanks-Morse has_ recently an- nounced a line of diesel engines in a 10-horsepower cylinder size operat- ing at a speed of 650 revolutions per minute. This new line is suitable for direct drive for use in small craft and also in diesel generating sets for use as auxiliaries in connection with the main propulsion engines. The new engine is already available in the two and four-cylinder sizes, which are rated at 20 and 40-horsepower, and in the generating sets oe ein in the design BY R. H. BACON the simplicity of the two-cycle engine in small engines which have all of the refinements of the largest diesel engines. Although the new engines follow in general principle the lines of the 60 to 360-horsepower series which are described in the February 1925 issue of MARINE REVIEW they have a number of interesting fea- tures because of their smaller size and higher speed. In order to secure the maximum compactness the cylinders are cast en-bloc. This construction simplifies the design in many ways. Water piping of any kind is entirely un- necessary and the exhaust header is applied in a very simple manner. It increases the rigidity of the entire as- sembly and at the same time reduces the weight in pounds per horsepower. In many cases small engines are set on foundations which are not rigid. This rigidity of the construction then becomes an important factor in main- taining bearing alignment. Lubrication and Simplified Control Other important features of tke engine include complete automatic lubrication, a simplified control which is arranged for both manual opera- tion and for governor control and a built-in transmission. The lower base is of sturdy construction with heavy transverse bridges which form the main bearing supports. At the for- ward end of the low- which are rated at 18 and 36 kilowatts, and it is expected that the 30-horse- power unit and 27- kilowatt generating set will be brought through shortly. The generating sets operate at a speed of 800 revolutions per minute. There is no ques- tion but what this new small diesel is one of the most out- standing develop- ments in diesel en- gine engineering. This com- partment also forms a sump for clean lubricating oil.
