36 the traffic congestion in the business district of the city. Nevertheless, the voters have authorized a bond issue for the building of an additional bridge to connect the Grant Park outer drive south of the Chicago river with the outer drive running north of the river. The bridge will complete a speedy route past but not through the congested center of. the city, and will enable motorists to go from one end of the city to the other without encountering cross traffic. The war department engineer, however, has decided not to go ahead with the work at this time, pending the report of MARINE REVIEW the Putnam commission on the pro- posed development of the Chicago har- bor. The proposed bridge would cross the river at the harbor mouth. * * * IONEERING work as a ship-to- truck carrier of freight has been undertaken by the Goodrich Transit Co. in establishing its new fleet of motor truck freight carriers from Hol- land to Grand Rapids, Mich., thus assuring through freight service from Chicago and Grand Rapids. The water-truck freight service is being started as a result of the abandon- ment of the Grand Rapids,’ Holland February, 1927 & Chicago electric line, which handled freight shipments from Holland, Mich., to Grand Rapids in transit from Chi- cago and other Lake Michigan points. The company was enabled to establish the motor truck fleet without raising freight rates, and the freight shipping experiment is operating satisfactorily. Truck service for passenger transpor- tation from Holland to Grand Rapids may be put to service later, but it is doubtful whether the Goodrich com- pany will operate a passenger service at this time. The Goodrich company also is operating a limited truck serv- ice between Sheboygan and Manitowoc.
