De Laval geared power plants have been adopted for the most notable passenger and high speed freight vessels recently built in the United States. The Eastern Steamship Company has had De Laval gears in service for several years on the ‘‘Boston”’ and ‘‘New York’’, and has also installed DeLaval gears on the ‘‘Yar- mouth’. The Southern Pacific Company De Laval Steam Turbine Company Trenton, New Jersey land, Ore., St. treal, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Port- Paul; Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, Spo- kake, Toronto, Vancouver. has installed De Laval turbines and gears on the vessels ‘“‘El Coston”’ (ex ‘‘Bienville’’) of 7100 HP., ‘‘El Oceano” of 600 HP. and another vessel, the ‘Dixie’, now being built by the Federal Ship Building Com- pany, which is to be equipped with a De Laval compound turbine operating on steam at 350 lbs. gage pressure and 150° F. superheat, and developing 8000 HP. when driving the propellor at 90 RPM. through De Laval double reduction gears. This vessel is expected to require less than 34 |b. of oil per shaft HP.
