GRAVING DOCKS in Repair and Reconditioning Work A series of talks, of which this is the third, on the importance of this type of drydock for survey, observation and repair activities. HEN the freight steamer “Lord Dufferin” was rammed and sunk while at anchor and subsequently ey raised and placed in graving dock, a ee, Wf survey disclosed that about 64 feet kof of her entire stern was cut off. : Being unable to recover the damaged portion, it was found necesssary to rebuild her with entirely new material. Placed on the substantial and perfectly aligned blocks of the graving dock, the damaged vessel was as comfortably settled as though on her original ways. During the time re- Setting tke new stern piece quired for preparing the hull work, our engineer- ing force replaced the miss- ing machinery. At the completion of the work a second careful survey disclosed that every beam and frame had'been perfectly aligned and took up its portion of the legiti- mate strain of the ship re- quiring practically no recal- culation or readjustment.
