MACHINERY PARTICULARS Main Engines—Two, twin tandem compound condensing steam engines built by Nordberg Mfg. Co. Diameter high pressure cylinder, 15 inches. Diameter low pressure cylinder, 30 inches; and a common stroke of 6 feet 6 inches. Indicated horsepower, 600 at 50 per cent cut- off taking steam at 250 pounds pressure, 125 degrees Fahr. superheat and a vacuum of 26 inches. Normal revolutions per minute, 18. Each engine is connected to a crank on the stern wheel by cast steel Pitmans 30 feet 6 inches long in two sections joined at the middle. Each DESCRIPTION One of four river tow- boats built for service on the upper Missis- sippi river between St. Louis and Minneapolis. These boats are ex- ceptionally economical due to the advanced design of the twin tandem compound con- densing steam engines which have been fitted. Steam is generated at 250 pounds and is su- perheated to 125 de- grees Fahr. end is equipped with adjustable boxes of pat- ented Nordberg non-pinching type. Boilers—One, marine water tube type built by Foster-Wheeler Corp.; size, 3072 square feet of heating surface. Oil is used as fuel and induced draft is supplied by fans made by the American Blower Co. The present equipment con- sists of four towboats and sixty cargo barges. The auxiliary equipment is of high grade and quite complete. The accommodations for offi- cers and crew afford every comfort.
