Cummings 2 Shaft Telltale Averaging Counter for the Merchant Marine A unique and exclusive feature of this instrument is the R. P. M. attachment which is especially appreciated by the man at the throttle. This makes it possible to obtain accurately with one reading the average R. P. M. of the two shafts. To use this R. P. M. attachment the counter is set to zero by turning the top knob one revolution, which takes but three seconds. With all figures set to zero, press the lower knob for fifteen seconds, and the counter indicates the exact R. P. M. without any calculations whatsoever. As it is important to know the total revolutions for both directions, one way gears are built in the counter. When engines are backing the counter continues to add revolutions instead of substracting as the ordinary continuous rotary counter does. Since there are ten figures on the unit ring of the counter each representing one complete revolution of the main shaft, the connection outside of the case must be geared down to make one revolution to ten of the main shaft.
