H. P. Diesel ferryboat BAINBRIDGE—Seattle and Port Blakely—One 800 B.H.P. engine—Clutch connected at each end of shaft DESCRIPTION The engine is a non- reversing unit with a one-way clutch carried in an extension base at each end. The two clutches are intercon- nected so that when other is automatically released. Control is by a hand wheel at the operating station. Re- versing or maneuvering is made possible by en- gaging the forward or after propeller, as de- sired. Length B. P.—177.75 ft.; Beam—55.2 ft. Depth—14.9 ft. Draft—11 ft. Gross Tons—540; Speed—12 knots No. of Propellers—Two; one at each end of vessel Fuel Consumption—Llbs. per b. h. p. per hour —0.39 Remarks The ferryboat BAINBRIDGE operates across Puget sound, between Seattle and Port Blakely. The Bainbridge was built in the spring of 1928 by the Lake Washington Shipyards of Houghton, Wash., for the Kitsap County Transportation Co. of Seattle and is probably the largest single- engined, double-ended diesel ferryboat afloat. The Kitsap County Transportation Co. decided on a double clutch, double-ended type of drive for the vessel due to the satisfactory service of their ferry KITSAP which has been in operation for the past three years. The Kitsap is equipped with a similar installation except that the engine is only 600 brake horsepower while the BAINBRIDGE is powered with an 800 brake horsepower engine. The power plant of the BAINBRIDGE, being the non-reversing unit with a one-way clutch carried. in an extension base at each end, permits positive reversing as the engine always turns one way.
