Steamship Merger Off The definite termination of negotia- tions seeking a merger of American- Hawaiian Steamship Co. and Dollar Steamship Co. Ltd., two of the larg- est shipping companies under the American flag, was announced on May 6 by President Roger L. Lapham of American-Hawaiian in the following statement: “Certain directors of the two com- panies have, as individuals, endeavored to find a basis of consolidation which they could recommend to their respec- tive stockholders for acceptance. Not having been able to agree on any plan satisfactory to both interests, negotiations have been definitely dis- continued.” The Dollar company operates five freighters and 19 combination passen- ger and freight vessels in the trans- Pacific and round-the-world trades. Organize New Company The Isthmian Steamship Co. a Delaware corporation, controlled by the United States Steel Corp., has been organized and has acquired and will operate the ocean going fleet of cargo steamers heretofore owned and operated by the United States Steel Products Co. under the trade name of the Isthmian Steamship Lines in transporting the company’s products.
