In 1908, the fireboats Joseph Medill and Graeme Stewart were put into service by the City of Chicago. They were the first ships in the world to be equipped with turbine-electric drive. They were G-E equipped. Since then, General Electric and associated companies have furnished propulsion equipment for completed ships and ships now under con- struction totalling more than three million shaft horsepower.
