Although rated at 8000 hp. at 105 r.p.m. of the propeller for 161% knots, and operating ordinarily with steam at 285 lb. pressure and 675° F. at the throttle, the tur- bines are designed to operate economically also at 4 os 400 lb., delivering 8800 shaft hp. at 110 r.p.m.; and 17 knots has been exceeded. As designed and built by the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., the seatrain ships measure 478 ft. overall, with a deadweight tonnage of 10,245 at 26 ft, 3 im. draft: and each will carry a hundred loaded freight cars.
