The three vessels, building at the Pusey & Jones Corp., the ALGONQUIN, CoMANCHE and MOHAWK, are each fitted with a Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Co. impulse type, double reduc- tion geared turbine connected to a single propeller. This unit develops 1500 shaft horsepower at 140 revolu- tions per minute of the propeller when supplied with steam at 300 pounds per square inch pressure, 200 degrees Fahr. superheat and 27% inches of vacuum. A hand valve also permits efficient operation at 500 shaft horse- power and 100 revolutions per minute of the propeller. The astern elements are designed for 1500 shaft horse- power at an increasing steam rate. The unit is self-contained in that the turbines, pinions and gears are sup- ported by the gear case. The condenser, which was also sup- plied by Westinghouse, is mounted transversely, and the exhaust trunks are bolted directly to the turbines with- out expansion joints. The propeller type circulating pump is built into the lower part of the inlet water chamber and its turbine drive is mounted on top of this chamber. Each of these three vessels is fitted with two Foster-Wheeler marine water- tube boilers operating at a steam pres- sure of 310 pounds per square inch at the superheater outlets and with 200 degrees Fahr. superheat. The normal capacity of each boiler is 13,000 pounds per hour. Each boiler is fitted with three Todd oil burners. Diamond soot blowers are installed. Each boiler has a heating surface of 2450 square feet, or 4900 square feet for both boilers. The boiler tubes between headers have a length of 8 feet 11 inches, and the first horizontal row of tubes, directly above the furnace, are 4 inches in diameter ,and of 7 Birmingham wire gage thickness. All tubes above the first row are of 2-inch diameter and 12 B.w.g. thickness, except in the cir- culating tubes which are 4 inches. The boiler drum is 42 inches in diameter. The furnaces each have 265 cubic feet of combustion space. Each boiler is fitted with a desuperheater consisting of steel tubing placed in the boiler drum and with capacity for desuper- 24 OILER room of the coast guard cutter Onon- daga. Two Bab- cock & Wilcox marine water- tube boilers. Working pres- sure 310 pounds per square inch. Superheat 200 degrees Fahr. Three oil burn- ers “for “each boiler heating 4000 pounds of steam per hour. The weight of each boiler dry is 77,000 pounds and the weight of the water for each boiler is 10,000 pounds, which gives a total weight of 87,000 pounds per boiler in operating condi- tion. Pumps for these three vessels were furnished by Warren Steam Pump Co., M. T. Davidson, Westinghouse Elec- tric & Mfg. Co., and Nash-Jennings. The Westinghouse Hlectric & Mfg. Co. also supplied two turbine driven gen- erator sets, each of 35-kilowatt ca- pacity. General Equipment Generally speaking, the remaining equipment not specifically referred to above, is the same for all of the five vessels and the equipment referred to from now on applies to all. These vessels are fitted with an elec- tric driven spur geared windlass, and an electric hydraulic steering gear with hydraulic pumps of Northern Pump Co. make. Both the windless and steering gears were supplied by the Lidgerwood Mfg. Co. Electric mo- tors driving the windlass and steering gear were supplied by the Diehl Mfg. HOP view of the Westing- house LHlectric & Mfg. Co:, double reduc- tion geared, im- pulse type tur- bine used as main propelling power in the three coast guard cutters Algonquin, Comanche and Mohawk. Will develop 1500 Sieg et hel Gonlees (0 piven sia 72 (0) Ree. at the propeller MARINE REVIEW—October, 1934 Co., and the controls by Cutler Ham- mer Mfg. Co. Each vessel was also supplied, by Lidgerwood, with a re- versible steam gypsy with double 81% x 8 inches cylinders. Propellers for all five cutters were supplied by F. Ferguson & Sons Co., who also supplied the propeller for the EscANABA, which is a four-bladed solid manganese bronze wheel, 10 feet 6 inches in diameter and 10 feet 3 inches pitch. Refrigeration for two hold storage boxes, one at a temperature of 26 de grees Fahr., and the other at a tem- perature of 38 degrees Fahr., is pro- vided by two Kelvinator refrigerating units, which are fully automatic in maintaining the required tempera- tures. On the OnonpAGA and TAHoma the various additional equipment and ma- terials were supplied as follows: Cop- per and brass pipe, Chase Brass & Cop- per Co.; pipe fittings and valves, Crane Co., and Scott Valve Mfg. Co.; safety valves, pressure gages, thermostats and pyrometers, and injectors, Con- solidated Ashcroft Hancock Co.; cor- dage, Plymouth Rope Co.; magnetic compasses, John E. Hand & Sons Co.; gyrocompasses and searchlights, Sper- ry Gyroscope Co.; anchors and anchor chain, Baldt Anchor Chain & Forge Co.; propeller shafts, Titusville Forge Co. It is understood that the Todd Ship- building & Dry Dock Co., Mobile, has been awarded a contract by the Water- man Steamship Corp. for recondition- ing the steamer ANTINOUS. The amount involved is about $120,000. Geared turbine propelling machinery of General Electric make is to replace the original reciprocating engine. An increase in speed is anticipated from 10 to 18 knots. <A good deal of new equipment will be installed including a contra rudder, and various engine room auxiliaries.
