The Mold Loft THE “template” system permits the fabrication of steel even before the keel of a ship is laid. These “templates” or pat- terns are made in the Mold Loft, shown above, 725 feet long, 92 feet wide. The floor, of matched pine strips, is a gigantic drawing board. The Loft occupies the entire top floor, indicated by an arrow in the view below. This system was devel- oped by the founders of the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. It is now in world-wide use. It assures accurate fabri- cation and handier assembly of steel shapes and plates into a hull.
