1901.) MARINE REVIEW. id —————_—_—_———_—_—————— SSS SHIP YARD OPERATIONS AT NEWPORT NEWS. [Special correspondence to the Marine Review. ] Newport News, Va., Feb. 26.—The announcement of the date for the preliminary trial of the battleship Illinois, now nearing completion at the plant of the Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock Co., is being awaited here with a good deal of interest. It was at first thought that the trial would take place Feb, 15, but the builders were unwilling to stop work on her then. Very rapid progress on important portions of her equipment was being made at that time and it was thought best to put off the preliminary run until the ship was practically ready for commission. Supt. Post thinks that the trial spin will take place some time in March unless there is some unforeseen hitch inthe program. Several of the officers for the new vessel have arrived here and are watching the work with a good deal of interest. None of the sailors has yet appeared. but it is expected that the jackies will begin to arrive as soon as the trial trip comes off. The Chicago and Illinois people generally are taking a good deal of interest in the affair and it is expected that they will make the namesake of their state a present of one of the handsomest silver services ever given to a ship, if she comes up to their expectations, Supt. Walter A. Post expresses himself as well pleased with the prog- ress upon the immense repair job on the burned North German Lloyd steamer Main, which has been at the ship yard for several months being rebuilt. Most of the work done thus far has been down in the holds of the immense transatlantic liner. Nothing official has yet been received concerning the contract for the woodwork on this big repair job. If the ship yard secures this part of the work too the North German Lloyd peo- The Marine Review wants a representa- tive in every city on the Creat Lakes. Everything is being placed in readiness for the launching of the Pacific Mail steamship Siberia, which is expected to go overboard about the middle of March. Her sister ship, the Korea, will go overboard a few weeks later. ‘Much interest is felt here in the constant rumors concerning the sale of the ship yard or its consolidation with some of the other great ship building interests of the country. The officials of the company invariably pronounce such rumors as groundless, but a bill which was passed by the recent special session of the Virginia general assembly is regarded as significant in this connection. The measure authorizes the company to dispose of its business and real estate holdings to any corporation now formed or which may be formed in the United States or in a foreign country.
