WRECKS AND STRANDINGS. The gale of October 30-31 caused several strandings, but the loss of the schooner S. P. Ely at Two Harbors, Lake Superior, was the most serious casualty of the blow. The Ely was built at Detroit in 1869, tonnage, 596, and had an insurance valuation of $10,000, rated A2, one-fifth owned by Harvey H. Brown was insured, and the Bradley estate loses the remainder of her value. The steamer Allegheny and consort Transfer went ashore alongside the schooner Mattie C. Bell on Big Summer Island, both were light-bound from Chicago to Manistique. The Allegheny is owned in Tonawanda by Charles Weston, 401 tons, built in 1856 and valued at $15,000. On the same date the steamer Oceanica grounded during a thick fog at Mackinac Point, but afterwards released herself without assistance, and pro- eeded. The steamer Escanaba grounded at the Detroit and Milwaukee R. R. Co.’s bridge at Grand Haven, and re- mained there long enough to seriously impair traffic be- fore being lightered. The schooner. Penobscot, ashore near Port Maitland, was released after jettisoning cargo, and towed to Buf- falo for final repairs. The steamer Josephine lost her consort, the Frank W. Gifford, on Lake Superior, through the tow line part- ing inthe gale. Great anxiety was felt for the safety of the schooner, and tugs were dispatched to search for her. She, however, turned up all well. The schooner Casey became water-logged at Nipigon Bay, and assistance was sent to her. The large steel schooner Marcia, in tow of the Matoa, parted her steel tow line off Keweenaw Point, Lake Superior, bad the blow, and falling off in the trough RESIDENCE FOR VOTING PURPOSES. The question has been asked whether seamen, whose vessels may be lying at different ports in the country on an election day, are entitled to vote there. They cer- tainly are not. Section 5 of Article VII of the constitu- tion as amended says: No elector shall be deemed to have gained or losta residence by reason of his being employed in the ser- vice of the United States, or of this state, nor while en- gaged in the navigation of the waters of this state, or of the United States, or of the high seas, etc. etc. If a seaman reached his home on the morning of elec- tion he would not lose his vote on account of not having resided in the township for twenty days, but on the other hand the law distinctly says he cannot gain a res- Tug suitable for about 80 feet long and 14 feet beam, with power suitable for purpose mentioned. Desire boat built within past six years. Price must be reasonable. Address W. B., care of MARINE RECORD. WANTED.
