The shaft has a tensile strength of 90,000 pounds (40 tons), probably 25,000 pounds (ii tons) more than any British steel shaft. It tras been established by tests that nickel steel has a higher elasticity than ordinary steel to the ex- tent of 31 per cent, and that the tensile strength is 20 per cent greater. The profits of the Hamburg and South American Steam- ship Co. for 1896, according to the annual statement just published, were $705,340. In 1805 the profits were only $470,120. These sums are the profits on voyages only. It is to be noticed that these results were obtained in spite of financial depression in Brazil and of the failure of the time of sale.
