mhe Marine Recond. 3 LEWIS’ MARINE MANUAL, By Edward N. Lewis, proctor in the maritime courts; author of the Law of In- land Shipping,” ete., ete. The Marine Manual is one of the most practical works on maritime matters ever published. The | book, which is well bound in cloth, has 500 pages all well filled with useful matter for | the guidance of mariners, merchants, for- | warders, millers, bankers, insurance and business men, und should be in the posses- sion of every vessel owner in the country, as well as masters and engineers. The Murine Manual cites nearly one thousand of the latest, United States, English and Canadian cases relating to suits in connection with vessels and cargoes. In order to place more explicitly before our readers the scope and value of this work, which is really a sum- mary of the law relating to, or in any way connected with the, shipping and mercantile interests of the inland lakes and sea coast waters of the United States and Canada, we insert the table of contemts, as follows: Chapter I. Part 1, charters; part 2, bills of lading; part 3, duties of ship owners, merchants, masters, etc., duties of forward. ers, Warehousemen, etc. Part 4, non-perfor- mance of charters, dissolution of charters, embargo; part 5, freight—How calculated, by whom payable, to whom payable, lien for, payment of, . Chapter If. Part 1, masters, their duties, wages, ete.; part 2, seamen, their duties, wages, etc.; part 3, passengers. Chapter III. Part 1, protests; part 2, de- murrage; part 3, general average, part 4, stoppage in transit. Chapter IV. Part 1, collisions; part 2, salvage; part 3, towage; part 4, pilots; part 5, marine insurance. Chapter V. Part 1, building of ships,’ busbands and brokers; part 4, sale and mortgage of ships. é Chapter VI. Part 1, necessaries; part 4, maritime law of nations. Statutory law, Navigation rules and rules of the road, coasting and smuggling regulations, carriage of dangerous goods, Sunday observance act, masters’ and mates’ certificates, regulation of ships, seamen’s wages acts, wreck and salvage acte, maritime court act, banks and banking, marine criminal law, order on passenger steamers, protection of rivers and streams, fisheries act, steam boat inspection xct, engineers’ certificates, inland Lloyds’ and building rules. A comprehensive article included in the Manual, on Inland Lloyds and shipbuilding rules by W. W. Bates, Esq. naval architict and marine export, Chicago, IIl., is one of great importance, giving as it does practical ideas of the construction and modes of rat- ing floating property. The MARINE RecorD has accepted the agency of the Marine Manual for the United States. The book will sent to any address, postage paid for $2.50, Ship chandlers sup- plied.
