Established in 1857. |AMERICAN SHIP WINDLASS C0. Builders of Steam Messenger Chain and Hand Windlasses, Power, crank and Steam capstans Wharf and Ferry Drops. Their capstan Wind- lasses have a Power capstan with a single head which has power and speed arrangement entirely independent of the Windlass, and which makes a pirect connection with the Windlass, without the intervention of any gearing to complicate it and increase the friction. In all their styles of Steam Windlasses, the Amer- ican Ship Windlass co., makes a direct connection between the Engines and the Windlass without counter shafts or additional gearing. This saves friction and liability to break down, and conduces to durability and ease in operating. These wind- lasses also have a counterbalance for the engines, and an automatic lubricator for worm and worm gear. The engines are placed together in the most accessible position. The above improvements and others too numerous to mention, but which are fa- miliar to Masters, Owners and Builders, are cover- ed by Patents owned exclusively by the American Ship Windlass company. The Helena has taken 2,650 tons out of Escanaba on 15} feet, and nearly 2,800 on a little over 16 feet. Up to the present time Milwaukee possesses the two largest wooden carriers on the lakes Tur Lake Erie Boiler Works, Buffalo N, Y., have received during the past week or- ders for boilers as follows: One scotch ma- rine boiler 9 feet diameter, 17 feet long, this boiler is for the Southern Pacific Company, New Orleans and is a duplicate of one which they built for the same company for the steamer ‘El Chico.’ Six scotch marine boilers each 13 feet diameter, 12 feet long, for a working pressure of 160 pounds steam for the Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works, Chester Pa. ‘The next thing required east may be modern steel built freight carriers to place such works of excel- lent construction in; it is somewhat gratify- ing to note that any of our principal lake ports can ably supply such a demand, while the Lake Erie Boiler Works takes the cake for boiler building. ae 4 : o P.
