THE MARINE RECORD. OBITUARY NOTICE. Carrais Ben CHAMBERS. Capt. Benjamin Chambers, of Cleveland, was taken sick sev- eral weeks ago with grip and by that, coupled with trouble over an accident which happened last summer while he was in charge of the steamer Queen of the West, induced his friends to place him under medical restraint two weeks ago. It subse- quently transpired that erysipelas was the enemy that was ae siduously gnawing away at his mental ability and physical vitality, and in spite of the closest and best attention of his friends and medical advisers, he passed away to eternal rest on Friday, January 29th. His funeral took place from his residence on Sunday under the auspices of the Masonic Fra- ternity, and the large numbers gathered to pay their tribute of respect to their departed brother, shipmate, and friend, bore full testimony to the worth uf the man and the esteem in which he was held by his many friends. Capt. Chambers was a prom- inent member of the Excelsior Marine Benevolent Association and had a large number of friends among yessel-men and ship- pers. ‘All knew him to be a large-hearted, generous and faithful, }. man, and as his earlier sickness and trouble called forth the sympathies of the marine fraternity in Cleveland, so his de- parture was the theme of regret among those whom we were brought into contact with during the week. Capt. Ben Chambers formerly hailed from Oswego, N. Y., and early in life was mate of the crack canal schooners trading between Chicago and Lake Ontario ports. The first yessel that he took command of was the schooner Granada, Afterwards he sailed the schooners Samana and Bolivia and fromthe latter went into the Maria Martin. was then appointed master of the Kate Winslow, and from to the tow barge Brunette, he sailed her for one or two se when he was appointed master of the steambarge Queen of West, which steamer he commanded last season to the en: satisfaction of her owners. The deceased was 42 years of age and leaves a wife and children who are plunged in the deepest grief at the loss o their bread winner. Yet, such were the strong friendship formed by Capt. Ben that the close sympathy of a large circle of friends must alleviate the sorrow felt at the late home of one who was a good husband, a loving father, and a man among men of the best calibre, 7 The funeral was largely attended, and among those present were many prominent lake captains. The pail-bearers were six lake captains who were his associates melee sailing, and there was a wealth of floral offerings. { MARINE AND INLAND INSURANCE. , Atlantic Mutual Insuran (ORGANIZED 1842.)
