SCLENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL, All mushrooms, Dr. G. Dupetti finds, cor- tin a poisonous substance when uncooked. Bars of steel obtained by the cementation process in the works at Unieux frequently contain crystals in those portions exposed to the hottest portion of the furnace. According to Maciejewsky it pays better to manufacture overgrown wheat into spirits than into bread. ‘he best results are ob- tained from unbruised wheat. Prot. Vogler considers that a part of the duty of observers at meteorological stations should pe to ascertain the quantity of oxy- gen in the air from time to time, as he be- lieves that the per centage of it varies or is intimately connected -with barometric changes. Myopia, with all its attendant annoyances, is increasing in the public schools both here and abroad, Intensity ot application to work under the stimulus of competition is one of the principal causes of short-sight- “edness among children. AImperfectly light- ed schoolrooms is another, Tn curious contrast with prevalent notions about the Arctic regions are the statistics of trade between the four ports of Nerwegian Finmark and the Russian ports of the White sen, especially Archangel. In 1841 470 ves- sels, employing over 2,000 men, visited the Finmark porte, and in 1882 a‘still larger number, bringing goads, chiefly the pro- ducts ‘of the rich fisneries of the White sea, to the amount of more than $700,000, and re- ceiving eargoer for Russia -of nearly equal value. The velocity of the wind within the vor- tex of a tornado is, according to a report of the United States signal service, variously estimated at from 70 to 800 miles an hour, the average being 392 miles. It would be interesting to know in .what way these ve- locities were estimated, An average of 392 miles certainly indicates supposed accuracy, but they were not measured, and a velocity of 800 miles an hour, corresponding on the lowest basis of calculation to a pressure of 1,500 pounds to the square toot, seems almost incredible. ‘There is, however, no reason to doubt, that over a very limited area the ve- locity and preseure of the wind in these tor- nadoes or whirlwinds are very much greater than any that-have been accurately meas- ured. The shipbuilding trade ow the Clyde con- tinues brisk, although not so many vessels are on the stocks as formerly. Recent sta- tistics show that for the month of May 31 vessels of 35,435 tons were launched, being an increase of 3,104 tons over the corre- sponding month last year, but 279 tons un- der that of May, 1881. In the five months there is an increase of 24,752 tons over the Output for the same period last year, and of 68,160 tons over that of 1879. As contrasted with 1873, which was then considered a pe- riod of extraordinary briskness, this year surpasses that by 36,560 tons. Of the ves- sels launched there are 24 steamers of 31,005, tons and 7 sailing vessels of 4,430 tons. ‘The inost important vessels launched were the City of Chicago, an Inman Liner of. 5,600 tong, and a Clan Liner, the Clan Macpher- son, of 3,880 tons. The average size of the vessels Inunched was 1,143 tons for the month, and 1,320 tons for the five months, as against 1,155 tons and 1,367 tons respec- tively, in 1882, and 1,615 tons and 1,605 tons in 1873, ‘There are 142 vessels at present in course of construction, being a decrease of §.as contrasted with the number building at the end of April, and 12 less thar at the close ot May 1882. A private dispatch from Detroit says tle schooner Hercules, sunk by the propeller Clarion of the Anchor Line, was insured for $2,000 in the ‘'hames and Mersey. ‘The Clar- ion is held responsible tor the disaster. ‘The agents vf the Anchor Line have made 2 proposition for settlement of the claim, but it is not yet uccepted by the owner of the Hercules.
