Captain Jobn Ericsson, the noted inven- tor, has just celebrated his eightieth birth- day. It is remarkable that he is yet hale and hearty and active, pursuing his studies and making his experiments with scarcely any abatement of the old-time ardor and en- ergy, devoting twelve hours a day to prac- tical inventions. His residence is at 36 Beach street, New York, and has undergone no change in appearance since 1864, and in- side there is the greatest multiplicity of mod- -els of the inventor’s skill. Captain Ericsson was born in Sweden, and at the age of thirteen was put in charge of a section of ship canal then being constructed. He soon after became an officer in the Swedish army, where he got his title. In 1829 he went to England, and there entered his locomotive novelty into the competition that made George Stephenson’s Rocket the winner, In 1837 he constructed the first practical pro- palling vessel, the Francis B. Ogden, and cause of the disfavor shown, it by the Brit- ish Admiralty he came to this country in 1839. His first work was the building of the war ship Princeton, though his greatest achievement was the Monitor. His torpedo boat, the Destroyer, is the result of his latest study, though his last invention is a sun mo- tor. Captain Ericsson takes plenty of exer- cise and is very temperate in all things.— Inter Ocean. TUE INNER HISTORY OF A REMARK- ABLE EVENT. The recent prize fight between Ryan and Sullivan,’ while it should receive the em- phatic denunciation of every law-loving cit- izen, was in many respects a most remarka- ble encounter. Althougha mere boy, Sulli- van is probably the most formidable pugilist -ever known. Ryan is alsoa powerful man but he entered the ring suffering terribly from piles and was therefore in no conditjon to fight. Had he used Swayne’s Ointment the result:.might have been reversed. We confess we are ‘astonished at the way this remedy removes all itching pain and sore- ness. ‘G. 8. RAND. RAND & BURGER SHIP-BUILDERS, CONTRACTORS & LESSEES OF DRY DOCK.
