THE MARINE R 7 ENGINEERING AND MECHANICAL, Mr. J. A. Wheeler, of Vandalia, Mo,, has recently patented a lubricator for engine cylinders, the object of which is to provide for giving aregolar and graduated supply of oil to engine cylinders and valves by au- tomatic means Operated by the engine. It consists in the combination, with an oil cup, ofa plunger feed rod, acting to supply a quantity of oil to the steam pipe. Mr. M. W. Newcomb, of Marysville, Kas., is the patentee of a new improvement iu photographic plate holders, by which aceu- racy of focus and rapidity of work is aecom- plished. ‘The plate holder is reversible to receive different. sized plates cn opposite sides Of the holder, ‘This invention is im- portant to photographers who have several persons to photograph on different sized plates about the same time, Mr. Lebbeus Simkins, of Marshfield, Ore- gon, is the patentee of an apparatus intend- ed to prevent boiler explosions, ‘he inventor provides a broad float attached to a gas pipe, the latter of which has perforations near the | float for carrying of the gases which the in- | ventor claims to be the cause of boiler ex- plosions, thus rendering boilers sate with a | very simple contrivance, | ECORD. ESTABLISHED 1836 @ A patent for protecting wooden piles ot | bridges, docks, ere., from worms and insects | or from the etlect of alternate wetting and | drying, has been patented by Mr.D. LH. Vale! entine, of Brooklyn, N.Y. A mould is! placed round the pile which is to be treated, | after it hae been driven into.the ground, | Portland or other cement is then poured in- | to the mould after the water has been pumped out. After the cement becomes fiard the shield is removed, when a canvas shield is stitched around the pile to protect the cement. . Mr. John S. Griffin, of Newhurg, Cleve- land, O., has patented an improved rolling mill, for rolling springs and sleigh shoes, and taperifg the same on the. flat sides and edges. On a shaft above the rolls double seams are mounted directly above the bear- ing blocks, so that when the shaft is rotated the double cams will press on the bearing blocks, and will thus depress the journal boxes of the upper roller and move the roll- er, so as to impart the proper form to the spring or, sleigh shoe. . An improvement in ore and stone crush- ers has recently been patented by > Mr. Dan- jel Brennan, Jr., of Grange, N. J. ‘The in ventor provides a movable jaw the lower part of which is adjustable independently of the movement of the upper portion, and has a simple contrivance for regulating the movement. ‘he movable jaw is hinged to the ridged jaw at its upper portion by a U- shaped-bolt, which enables the movable jaw to be readily taken from the main jaw. and reversed end for end, or side for side, so that as the jaw becomes. worn jt may be réversed, thus rendering the entire machine more en- during. The inventor is a practical road maker, and his experience in crushing stones for inacadamizing purposes has led to this improved machine, which it is believed is destined to supersede many of the stone erushing machines in uses.— Scientific Amer- ican. t . BUFFALO BREAKWATER. The engineer in charge of the improve- ments at Buffalo harbor reports as. follows: In rebuilding the superstructure of the break- water, now that there is nosettlement of the superstructure, it would be well to modify the plan by building the superstructure for two-thirds its width on the land side to the hight of only 56 feet above the water level, and the outer thi.d on the Lake side to the hight of 12 teet above that level, as has been done with good effect in the East breakwater at Oswego, N.Y. The lower plat would then be high enough for all ordinary weather, while the upper one would shut out the sea. This method would not increase the cost of cons ruction, and the stability where a firm foundation existe, as in this case, would not be affected. ‘Io rebuild the superstruc- ture in this way would cost about $60 per lineal foot. A construction of the breakwater ex- tension and repairs is a work contemplated during the fiscal year ending June 30th, 1885. The following money statement accom- panies the report: On July Ist, 1882, the amount available was $63,923; the amount appropriated in 1882, $125,000; total, $188,- 923; amount expended for the fiscal ‘year ended June 30th, 1883, exclusive of out- standing liabilities July Ist, 1882, $51,461; July, 1st, 1883, outatanding liabilities, $10,- 066; total, $67,527 ;. July Ist, 1883, amount available, $121,396; amount (estimated) re- quired for the completion of the existing project, $1,330,000. ‘The amount that he can profitably expended for the fiscal year end- ing June 30th, 1885, is $300,000.
